Case Study: Public Perceptions of Health Care Associated Infections

How worried are people when it comes to hospital infections? Do our perceptions match the statistics on infections? Simply put, no.

Hospital infection rates have decreased in the last 5 years but the general public’s perception has not. In our recent research for the Department of Health we were asked to find out how public perceptions of HCAIs are generated.

A mix of interview and research approaches: focus groups, extended pathway depths, observational exercises, and generated filmed content pre and post-elective surgery. Audiences covered general public, patients, carers and an extensive variety of hospital staff. The research was fascinating. Subtle markers, from scruffy waiting room chairs, empty cups from vending machines to cigarette butts at the entrance to a hospital make an impact on people’s perceptions of infection control.

The research helped to inform Department of Health on-going initiatives and policy regarding HCAIs and how best to communicate to the general public.

Case Study: HMRC GROWTH POINTS

Ever considered what it’s like to set up a business? What steps are required to ensure your new company meets all obligations?

We conducted research, on behalf of HMRC to find out from SMEs what it is like setting up, operating and meeting new tax obligations – everything from registering as a business, taking on your first employee, employee benefits and VAT.

The research was conducted in four parts and consisted of in-depth face-to-face interviews with a variety of industry sectors. We interviewed jewellery makers to a baby present company, who detailed the trials, tribulations and high points of running their own business. The research demonstrated a strong ad hoc approach to tax obligations and a high dependency on professional assistance when completing tax returns.

This research helped HMRC re-evaluate how they communicate with new businesses and consider new ways of encouraging new business owners to take control of their tax obligations.
